Handyman in Fitchburg, WI

Fitchburg wraps around the south edge of Madison, stretching from busy suburban corridors near the city line down into open farmland, marsh and woods. It began as a farming town in the late 1830s, was organized as the Town of Greenfield in 1847 and renamed Fitchburg in 1853, and it incorporated as a city in 1983, partly to stop Madison from annexing more of it. Since then it has been one of the faster-growing places in the county, with an estimated population well over 35,000. That growth shows in the housing. Near the Madison border, along Fish Hatchery Road, Seminole Highway and the streets off McKee Road, are ranches, split-levels and bi-levels from the 1960s through the 1980s, plus plenty of apartment and condo complexes. Farther south and west come newer neighborhoods, including Swan Creek, Terravessa and the homes around Fitchburg Center, built from the 1990s to now with open floor plans, vaulted ceilings and attached garages. Out in the rural southern part of the city, older farmhouses and homes on acreage bring their own list of chores. So Fitchburg work can mean a forty-year-old split-level with a tired bathroom, a new townhome with builder-grade hardware, or a farmhouse with a gate that hasn't closed right in years.

Fitchburg is a city of trails and open space as much as streets. The Capital City Trail crosses it on the way between Madison and the countryside, the Badger State Trail heads south toward Illinois, and the Cannonball Path links neighborhoods to Madison's south side. Dawley Conservancy and the Nine Springs corridor give the north end long stretches of marsh and prairie, and McKee Farms Park is where families gather for ball games and community events. Business and research campuses, including Promega's, line the area off Fish Hatchery and Fitchburg Center, and the Verona Road and McKee Road corridors carry most of the daily traffic. South of Lacy Road the city opens up into fields, farm lanes and wooded lots that look nothing like the suburban north end, and many of those homes sit on larger parcels with outbuildings, long fence lines and gravel drives. We plan visits accordingly, bringing the right ladder and post tools for a country property or the compact kit for a third-floor condo.

What Fitchburg neighbors book most

Fitchburg is right next door to us, a quick run down Fish Hatchery Road or the Verona Road corridor, so even a one-item job is easy to schedule.

Jobs we handle a lot around Fitchburg

Fitchburg's split-levels and ranches from the 1970s and 1980s keep us busy with bathroom faucet and toilet repairs, worn shutoff valves, sticking sliding patio doors, dated light fixtures, and garages that need wall storage and ceiling racks to make room for two cars again. In the newer neighborhoods, the list leans toward nail pops and trim gaps, TV and shelf mounting, smart thermostats and video doorbells, closet systems and furniture assembly for families moving in. Out in the rural south end we see more fence and gate work, from sagging farm-style gates to wind-damaged privacy fences, along with outbuilding doors, pressure washing of siding and decks, and gutter cleaning under big oaks. Across the city, the freeze-thaw cycle moves posts, cracks caulk and knocks doors out of line, so spring often brings a burst of adjustment calls.

Questions we hear in Fitchburg

Do you work in the condos and townhomes along Fish Hatchery Road?

Yes, often. Condo and townhome jobs in Fitchburg tend to be interior work: patching drywall, adjusting doors and closet tracks, replacing faucets and toilet parts, swapping dated light fixtures, mounting TVs and assembling furniture. If your association has rules about work hours, parking or exterior changes, let us know when you book and we'll plan around them.

Our newer home in Swan Creek or Terravessa has small cracks and loose trim already. Is that normal?

Yes, in the first few years it's very common. New framing dries out over the first couple of heating seasons, and in Wisconsin that drying is dramatic because indoor air gets so dry in January. That shows up as nail pops, small cracks at drywall corners and above doors, trim that separates at the joints and doors that stop latching. We work through the whole list in one visit, setting new screws, re-caulking and filling trim, adjusting hinges and strikes, and touching up paint so the fixes disappear.

We have a long fence line and a farm gate on a rural Fitchburg property. Can you fix it?

Yes. We reset or replace heaved and rotted posts, setting new ones deep enough to resist frost movement and bracing gate posts so they carry the weight, rehang sagging gates with heavier hinges, add anti-sag kits on wide wood gates, and replace broken rails and boards. Before we dig, we call Diggers Hotline so buried lines are marked, and on a big property we'll walk the fence with you and prioritize the sections that matter most.

Can you add storage to a two-car garage that only fits one car?

That's one of our favorite Fitchburg jobs. We install wall rail systems, heavy-duty shelving anchored into the studs, overhead ceiling racks for seasonal items, and hooks for bikes, ladders and yard tools, getting most of the clutter up off the floor. We plan the layout around your car doors, the garage door tracks and any freezer or workbench so everything fits without bumping.
