Handyman in Sun Prairie, WI
Sun Prairie lies northeast of Madison along US 151, and it is now the largest suburb in the area, with roughly 40,000 residents and still growing. Its name goes back to 1837, when a party heading to build the territorial capital crossed the open prairie here on a bright day, and the first settler arrived in 1839. It grew as a farm and canning town, became a village in 1868 and a city in 1958, and its biggest growth came in the 1960s and again in the early 2000s. The housing follows that pattern. Close to downtown along Main and Bristol Streets are older frame houses and foursquares with plaster walls, deep porches and basements that have seen a lot of spring rain. Around them spread the ranches, Cape Cods and split-levels built after the war and through the 1970s. Beyond those, on former farmland, are the large newer neighborhoods, including traditional neighborhood developments like Smith's Crossing and Providence, with front porches, alley garages and houses set close together, along with conventional subdivisions of two-story homes and townhomes. Many of those newer houses are now old enough that their original builder-grade fixtures, faucets and doors are starting to wear out at the same time.
Downtown Sun Prairie still has the feel of a small-town main street, with old brick storefronts, the historic water tower and Cannery Square, built where the old Fuhremann canning factory stood, with a plaza that hosts summer markets and concerts. The downtown has rebuilt since the July 2018 gas explosion destroyed part of a block on Main Street, and the community's response is a point of local pride. The city calls itself the Groundhog Capital of the World and celebrates Jimmy the Groundhog every February, and the Sweet Corn Festival in August brings a parade, a carnival and tons of fresh corn. Angell Park hosts midget car racing on summer Sundays. Koshkonong Creek runs through town, and heavy spring and summer storms have flooded low areas more than once, which is why drainage around the house matters here. US 151, Highway 19 and the Interstate on the west edge carry most of the traffic, and the East Towne area is only minutes away.

Jobs we handle a lot around Sun Prairie
In Sun Prairie's older homes near downtown, we patch plaster and drywall, rehang doors that have shifted over decades of frost movement, update light fixtures in rooms that never had good lighting, and repair old faucets and toilets. In the postwar ranches and split-levels, it's bathroom updates, bedroom ceiling fans, sliding doors that drag on worn rollers, and basement shelving. The newer neighborhoods bring nail pops, worn builder-grade faucets and fill valves, TVs mounted over fireplaces, video doorbells and smart thermostats, and fence repairs where wind across open ground has pushed panels and posts out of line. Spring and fall bring gutter cleaning, downspout extensions and caulking, and every winter the ice dams on story-and-a-half houses send a few people looking for help with stained ceilings.
Questions we hear in Sun Prairie
Our Sun Prairie house is about twenty years old. Why is so much wearing out at once?
Homes built during the early-2000s boom got builder-grade parts that tend to reach the end of their life together. Faucet cartridges stiffen and drip, toilet fill valves and flappers fail, cheap hinges sag, bath fans get noisy, caulk around tubs and windows cracks, and the first round of interior paint is tired. None of it is serious alone, but it adds up. We'll go through the house with you, make one list and work through it in a single visit, with our licensed plumbers and electricians handling the fixture connections.
Do you work in Smith's Crossing and Providence?
Yes. In those neighborhoods homes sit close together with porches out front and garages along the alleys, so we plan access through the alley and keep our work tidy. Porch railings and columns, storm doors, gutters on the steeper roofs, and interior punch lists are common jobs. If your homeowners association has guidelines for exterior changes, share them and we'll stay within them.
The fence along the back of our lot keeps leaning. What causes that?
On open ground like much of Sun Prairie, wind loads a solid privacy fence like a sail, and the freeze-thaw cycle slowly lifts posts that weren't set deep enough. Once a post starts to lean, the panels pull the next ones along. We reset or replace the leaning posts, setting them deeper with proper backfill or concrete and drainage at the bottom, re-fasten or replace the panels, and adjust gates so they swing and latch again. Diggers Hotline gets called before any digging.
